I’m not going to start with the beginning. I need to discuss that at the end. So I’ll start with the shallow parts. Sam with a sword is ALL KINDS OF YUMMY. And Dean looks damn good. His hair is longer, which makes me happy.
Oh, look, it’s
Also, the show’s history tells us that reapers don’t know where you go after you die, or if they do, they won’t tell you. So if Kevin has refused to move on, how does he know Heaven is locked down? Why is Kevin, who stayed attached to an object, aware that those who chose to move on are stuck in the veil? (Ha ha, just kidding. Reapers have no rules or history or continuity. It would be pretty cool if they did, wouldn’t it?)
I don’t know what Dean’s relationship is with Crowley. He told him Crowley that if he saw him again, he’d kill him. And yet he has his phone number and is willing to call him for information. WTF? And Sam seems puzzled by Dean’s relationship with Crowley, even jealous, which makes sense. Back in the church at the end of season 8, Sam tried to explain how he feels like a failure because Dean is forced to turn to others – including a vampire – for help. And so, now? Dean working with a demon? Casually referring to “the devil you know?” If there was any continuity to this show, that would really push Sam’s buttons, so I hope that’s what’s happening here.
Angel squabbles. Yawn. I really couldn’t care less. I don’t like the way Castiel’s story arc is completely separate from the Winchesters now. Although his nascent angel army is promising. I hope one of his new followers finds an angel blade for him, since I think he left his in Bartholomew.
Oh, hey, look. We’re back at Castle Storage. They must be a national franchise. It’s like the Biggerson’s of storage places. (Are there really storage places with indoor halls? Like hotels?) Remember when we saw Abaddon at Castle Storage? Wouldn’t it be a great twist if that meant something? If the Castle Storage sign wasn’t just a prop just like the same bedspread and/or lamp you see in multiple episodes? Like, if Abaddon and Crowley were actually working together and Castle Storage was their headquarters? That would be kind of awesome.
Speaking of awesome - Linda Tran! What a wonderful badass she is. This woman needs to be made an honorary Winchester. Too bad it’s likely the last time we’ll see her. And poor Sam had to be the one to tell her Kevin was dead. (Or, not tell her but just look upset and let her figure it out. Whatever.) Kind of unfair that Dean got out of that one. So, um, Linda looks to be in pretty good shape, considering we were told earlier that if she was alive, she’d be better off dead. Awkward! You really should have looked for her, boys.
So, the end. “He’s my son. It's my job to keep him safe as long as I can.” Who does that sound like? Linda/Kevin neatly parallels Dean/Sam (or, if we want to say it SAT style, Linda: Kevin :: Dean: Sam). Linda is going to do something inappropriate (but not really, under these circumstances, because Kevin is currently locked out of Heaven, so it’s not like he could move on even if she agrees he should) to keep Kevin around. Yeah, Linda’s definitely a Winchester. And then Happy Ending Ghost!Kevin says “Can you two get over it?” and NO, they CAN’T, stupid Ghost!Kevin. They can’t just sweep this under the rug. They need to work through it.
So the temporarily reunited Trans take their leave and Dean starts to say something and BAM! Sam is just fucking GONE, DONE WITH YOUR SHIT, NOT HANGING AROUND FOR ANY OF THIS. And I’m not sure how I feel about that. Because, guys, in the “Then” sequence, they showed Sam saying he wouldn’t save Dean, but they cut out “under the same circumstances.” And that really, really concerns me. Because that was SO important to understanding Sam’s POV. He wasn’t saying he wouldn’t try to save Dean if he were in danger. I mean, the very beginning of the show was about his reaction to exactly that situation, and we had Sam with a SWORD ready to KILL whatever was threatening his brother. He was saying that under the same circumstances, i.e., accepting his death and stating he didn’t want anyone to deal it away, Sam would respect his wishes. So why did they cut that out? Why are they minimizing the MOST IMPORTANT THING SAM SAID? This worries me, it really does. Does it mean we interpreted it wrong? Was it really just a throwaway line and not the crux of Sam’s argument? And why did Sam leave so abruptly? He’s angry in general right now, but what made him stomp-out-of-the-room angry?
Poor Dean. Back to where he started, listening to “Lonely is the Night” in his room.
So, after all of this rambling, I still don’t know how I feel about this episode, other than confused and concerned. Also, I thought I was spoiled for this one but I guess the pics I saw were for one in the future… maybe 9.15? Bleh. I just want to get that over with so I can go back to being my pure unspoiled self again.
